Legislation Addressing the EU Pay Directive

    Hungary typically transposes EU directives on a verbatim basis, similarly to several other EU Member States. However, there is currently no indication from the legislature as to whether the transposing legislation will implement the Directive exactly as written or will introduce additional or stricter requirements (“gold plating”).

    The Hungarian Parliament has not yet adopted legislation transposing the Directive. The draft law has not yet been published; the underlying concept is currently subject to social consultation. According to press reports, the legislation is expected to be adopted in autumn 2026. There is no publicly available information regarding the specific content of the expected legislation at this time.

  • their individual pay level; and
  • the average pay levels broken down by sex for workers performing the same work as them or work of equal value to theirs

Prohibitions on workers disclosing pay information

Contractual clauses that prevent employees from disclosing information about their pay are prohibited under the Directive.
